fs2 Lecture: Signing About the Human Body- Bones and Soft Tissue (Interpreter CEUs)

Transcript: When signing about bones, organs and soft tissues of the body people will often point to the location on the body or use classifiers to describe the body part prior to fingerspelling.  The signer may also provide the category such as “bone” prior to fingerspelling the name. This provides the viewer with context and improves comprehension. For example: Bone, point to arm, name HUMERUS.  Body parts outside the normal signing space can be represented by identifying the body location and then using the upper body to represent locations on the lower body. For example: LEG Bone, point to arm, name Femur. Areas difficult to point to can be represented with classifiers. For example: Head- show skull with 5 hands point to back of head bone- BONE- Occipital.
