When do you use HOW ARE YOU in ASL?

This is one of the first questions every ASL student learns. It opens small talk with Deaf friends, classmates, and teachers, and it invites the answers taught in the same lesson: FINE, GOOD, TIRED, BUSY. Keep eye contact while you ask; the question lives as much on the face as on the hands.

HOW ARE YOU is Day 1 vocabulary in the 216-Day Challenge, part of the very first conversation you learn to hold.
